Dauntless and selfless, you stand watch. The last to sleep, first to wake. Always on guard. You move amongst us in sometimes secret ways at dark hours around sharp edged dangers that squeak, and beep, and really, really hurt heels.
With night-vision, your measured pace falls too close to a special thing that should have been put in a special space. Catch your toe, catch your breath, hold the curse words. But to the void … ‘why don’t they ever put their s#!+ away!?’ Why would they? It answers. The precious want to be found. Besides, finding the lost, broken, tumbled, tossed and in-need-of-mending, is part of your grand purpose.
Who else could see these things as you do? Super-powered supervision goes beyond x-rays. It stretches and flows through memory into sacred moments. It gives colour and life and breath to stuffies and tea parties. It travels in time, to make past presents into gifts given often- wrapped in hugs, sealed with kisses. Sighing, you know that curio will flee again. Behind the couch. Under the bed. Into the backpack.
Thank goodness that you want to be at your post, not because you have to be, you gotta be, and just because you are everywhere…you can’t be everywhere. But really kinda are. It’s no secret, that your identity is known, all of it. Not masked or caped and to those in your care, super status means little. As long as their dreamy innocence is protected by the most powerful person in their universe, they bloom. They lift mountains. They leap buildings. They soar. Just like you. How unremarkably amazing it would be to have your own hero reading stories before bed, doing pickup after school, and making KD for dinner.
Some superheroes clock in and out. Chasing the minimum of flight time, waging battle between me-time and thee-time. Not you. False alarms melt into mommy moments. Them dreaming. Or mumbling. Or wrestling with dark thoughts and crying out for help. Still best to check up, tuck in and peck lightly. Other times, like those scary ‘what-do-I-do-now-there’s-no-manual-for-what-I-gotta-do-next-so-I’m-just-gonna-hold-you-for-a-minute’ kinda times are true badge moments in your heroes journey. Those times can lead to action. Lifting fever like a broken bridge. A cooling whisper from your lips to their forehead. An arch-illness broken. A day saved.
This little big planet is under your protection. Assemble your mantels Mom, teacher, mentor, guardian angel. Worry over future battles is not worth stating now, they’re not withstanding the beauty of now. The truth about superheroes is that there’s no marvel in the work. No justice in their league. It just is what it is. When true heroes do get caught on film- no poses, no pretence, no pauses, and few witnesses emerge. Hugs and kisses pay the debt in full. Public works of private love is never work though right? And really, who’s keeping receipts? In private your labour never ended. Nor could it.
