blue balloons

it is hot and loud.
you grumble through the crowd.
shaken and jostled that she had caused this
this hard right and sharp dip that make her bones rattle.
and perched on your hip she slips slightly
when you stop to curse at the guy on a skateboard.
hard words to understand hard hands hold her more tightly.
the sudden halt surprised and the prized balloon is released.
she cries and checks the sky with wet eyes. and you red lined do not realize
that in succession from another direction two more balloons rise.
a distress signal answered from across the carnival.
