Symbolism and application of the item
On the front side of the cross popular, you can see the traditional crucifixion of Jesus Christ. It should be noted that in the Orthodox iconography Christ is shown not as an exhausted, dying martyr, but as God Almighty, who opens His hands as if trying to embrace the whole world. Jesus Christ was crucified outside the walls of Jerusalem, on Calvary Mount. We can see the walls of the city and the mount depicted on the cross. Also here we can notice some letters. What do they mean? Letters ( in Russian) „Г and А“ mean the head of Adam. According to the old legend, there was his grave. And the letters „T“ and „K“ mark a cane ( on which the sponge soaked in vinegar was given to the thirsty Jesus) and a spear ( with which the guards poked His side to see if Jesus was still alive). There are two more words inscribed on the cross. One of them is the initials of Jesus Christ, another is a Greek word ( in Russian letters) НИКА which means „ he wins“. The backside of the cross is decorated with the icon of St Nicholas, the Wonderworker. This is the most venerable saint not only in Russia but all over the world as well. For the Western Christians, he is the kindhearted Santa Claus. For the orthodox - Nicola Ugodnik ( Benefactor), assistant in affairs, an advocate of travellers, patron of students, comforter of the offended and needy, healer of the most terrible and serious illnesses, a representative for people before god. The icon, which is on the cross, has the image of St. Nicholas of Zaraisk. This, famous for its miracles, icon was brought in 1224 from the city Korsun to the city Zaraisk according to the order of St Nicholas, the Wonderworker and it became one of the most venerable images of st. Nicholas in Russia.
As it is considered that Saint Nicholas is the patron of children, coopers, sailors, fishermen, merchants, broadcasters, the falsely accused, repentant thieves, brewers, pharmacists, archers, pawnbrokers, so, this cross could be a nice little gift to any representative of these occupations.
