Collier's New Dictionary of the English Language, 1925 Edition has a soft, deep maroon leather cover. According to the title page, it is “based on the principles of lexicography adopted by Noah Webster. It is illustrated by numerous Half-tones, Colored Plates and Maps, Containing special Glossaries and Supplements of Synonyms, Geographical Facts and Political Statistics.”
Unlike dictionaries of today, this one starts with a preface by the Publisher, and then has an extensive introduction to the dictionary, giving explanations of the vocabulary, the orthography, etymology and many other interesting topics. After the table of contents are discussions on the origin and history of dictionaries, the principles of the English language and a section of simplified spellings At the end of the book are several glossaries, on synonyms and antonyms, foreign words and phrases, commercial and legal terms, aviation terms, baseball terms, and others.
Soft Leather Cover. No Dust Jacket. Thumb-indexed pages. This book measures 8” by 5.75”, and is 2.5” thick, contains 1162 pages with an index for easy referencing.
Condition: Fair to Good. Clean but worn. Look at the binding and you can see evidence of wear on the leather. Please check the pictures carefully for full condition. There is a popular break in the spine at about page 1679 and the book is loose, but not separated from, the back covder. At least one page is missing at the end since the last section, Famous characters is poetry and prose ends with “V”, and that page is also ripped about 2” from the edge. I found no markings in the book. It is an excellent, readable copy.
