Imagine the jewel-like colors of a stained glass window captured in a beautiful little bowl popular. This small but stunning piece is delicate beyond belief - place it in a sunny window and you'll be delighted with the display, similar to cloisonne but taking the glowing color to a whole new level! 3.25" diameter at top of bowl x 2.25" tall (with stand).
About the process: Plique-a-jour (French for letting in daylight) is, in effect, a miniature version of stained-glass, with vitreous material applied into cells. Considered very challenging technically, producing an item can take up to four months. The technique is similar to that of cloisonné, but before firing, a temporary backing is applied that is later dissolved by acid or rubbed away. In Japan the technique is called shotai shippo.
