This stunning necklace composed entirely of Antique Sherpa Coral glass beads. popular
These beads are at least 100 years old made sometime between 1900-1930. During this period, Sherpa Coral beads were crafted in China and traded in Nepal and Tibet. These gorgeous beads were made to replicate coral. They were purchased by the Sherpa people of Tibet who inhabit the Himalayan Mountains and eventually the beads became associated with this tribal group. They were extremely popular in Nepal and Tibet because real coral was exceptionally expensive. Sherpa coral beads have been used for centuries in jewelry as a substitute for real coral. It is obvious why, these beads are exquisite.

Today these beads are considered little treasures, extremely pricey, because authentic beads are difficult to acquire. This strand is authentic, it was purchased by a collector over 30 years ago in Tibet.
Authentic antique trade beads of this quality often have pits and dark crevices which adds to their character but also verifies their age (Please look closely at the photos).

That said….this is an absolutely stunning necklace, ancient and exotic, the beads will add a brilliant pop of color to any look. It is also the perfect length measuring a significant 36”. Lastly, the necklace has been beautifully constructed with a simple hook clasp and hand knot work.

Why red “coral” beads?
Compared to the West, Chinese culture has a surprisingly different and more powerful color symbolism. Important colors are associated with the five elements and the color red is associated with fire. Red is an auspicious as well as a popular color in Chinese culture. It symbolizes luck, happiness and joy. It also represents summer season and the Southern Direction. It is the color worn by brides, since it is believed to be an auspicious color for warding off evil. Red also represents vitality, celebration and fertility in traditional Chinese color symbolism. It can be found everywhere…even on the gates of the forbidden city.
