Wedgwood Jasperware Cobalt Blue Biscuit Jar/Barrel, White Raised Patterned "Sacrifice Figures" England popular C. 1879
Beautiful 19th century antique Wedgwood blue Jasperware biscuit barrel/jar with a glazed white interior, made in 1879. The lovely figures are a classical motif referred to as the "Sacrifice Figures", described by Robin Reilly in "Wedgwood - The New Illustrated Dictionary." It popular shows elegant Grecian women, cupids/cherubs and floral and tree designs.
The Jar has a silver plate mount and handle that has some patina from age. The round shape jar rests on a flared or flanged decorative foot. There is deep crazing/cracking present on the underside of the jar as seen in picture 7 and there is one spot of it on the inside as well as seen in picture 8. This does not have a lid and some of these jars came with a stand to sit on however this one does not.
