This is a very early aluminium tin rice or herb ball as would be used in the French kitchens at the end of years 1890
Could be used nowadays as an original pomander / potpourri !
Pierced of multiple holes, round and rice-shaped, it was filled with rice, tapioca, herbs or pasta and placed into the broth of the soup or stew, view my photos important part of the description
The closing device is primitive and the ball was attached to the handle of the pan with a bit of string or a small chain long disappeared. It could also be hanging onto a wooden spoon accross the pan as my old grandma did, see pictures !
