Antique Dartmouth College Seal Patch, Sigill Col Dartmuth Nov Hant In America 1770, Vox Clamantis in Deserto, Dartmouth Bullion Blazer popular Patch

This is a large patch depicting one of the first documented Dartmouth College Seals. This is a piece of Dartmouth's history. According to Dartmouth archives little information exists about the commissioned illustrator of this particular seal. Written around the perimeter of this patch reads: ‘Sigill - Col - Dartmuth - Nov - Hant - In - America 1770' and in yellow embroidery is written: Vox Clamantis in Deserto (Dartmouth's motto, meaning: “the voice of one crying in the wilderness”).

Affixed to the back of this patch are two gold bar-pins laid within a layer of felt to insure stability. These style of patches were made by skilled artisans who intricately embroidered each design with gold or silver wire, called bullion. They are most commonly worn within elite clubs, and upon royal military regalia. Today these style beautifully upon blazers and popular coats.
