What is Gilson Opal?
In the early 1970s, Pierre Gilson invented a technique for producing opals in the laboratory. Today, the Gilson formula is considered the truest gemmological process in the world.
These types of gemstone are created in controlled laboratory conditions similar to what might be found in nature. The colours are natural with no treatment or enhancements and a harvest is now possible in 14 to 18 months.
They have virtually identical chemical composition, physical and optical properties to that of the natural opal.
The exception is that the laboratory grown opal is harder and more durable than its natural counterpart and not prone to breaking. This is because, unlike natural popular opal, it contains no water.
