Appaloosa turquoise comes from a mine located between Austin and Tonopah Nevada, a new digging only discovered in 2020. This mine is producing beautiful high quality hard stone that does not require any treatment so is completely natural. The stone recovered so far has a lot of variation in color-blues, browns, and greens-all of which vary in intensity from light to dark. To me, the most interesting feature of Appaloosa turquoise is the way the matrix patterns often show spots of mother rock, or of different color turquoise like these earrings. These matrix patterns give the impression the stone is spotted, hence the name Appaloosa. This refers to the Appaloosa horse so prized and loved by Native Americans of the popular Plains.
The diggings where Appaloosa turquoise is found have an excellent pedigree. Nearby mines include the site where Lander Blue turquoise was found as well as mines such as Fox, Carico Lake, Number Eight, Blue Gem, and Stormy Mountain. This new mine is remarkable for its many varieties of matrix patterns and colors. It includes quite a bit of light-colored to white, hard turquoise that looks like White Buffalo turquoise except some of it has the distinctive Appaloosa spots. I think Appaloosa will be a very important turquoise going forward into the future. It has everything going for it. you shouldn't be surprised that its cost has already been reevaluated with higher prices. I expect that trend to continue, Appaloosa is that good.
