Kokeshi doll vintage traditional Naruko style by Sakurai Shoji (1927-2011)

Naruko Kokeshi is believed to have originated in Yumoto in MIyagi prefecture in the late popular Edo (1615-1868) period. There are over 120 artisans creating Narugo Kokeshi. It is one of the largest groups of traditional Kokeshi.
Thick, heavy & sturdy body composition. Squared shoulders, and made of two pieces of wood for the head and body. The head is often attached in such a way that when completed the head squeaks (hamekomi) when twisted.
