"For fifty years I have been studying, working, and thinking about clay. Even so, the element of surprise is important in my work. I love the audacity of color, and by contrast, its absence. Mine is a deep commitment to all living things, inspired by the beauty and diversity observed in every plant, animal, and moment in time". ~ Nancy Patterson Lamb, founder, Iron Mountain Stoneware
Iron Mountain Stoneware was founded in 1965 by ceramist Lamb and her business partner Albert Mock in the Southern Highlands where the borders of Tennessee, Virginia and North Carolina (as they are described in an old IMS brochure), in a town called Laurel Bloomery, Tennessee.
From what I've read about her Nancy Lamb (b. 1927) was passionate, intrepid and resourceful. Before settling in Laurel Bloomery and after studying at Los Angeles Art Center College of Design, at the age of 25 Lamb began working and traveling around the world. Her first stop was a two-year stint on scholarship as a guest artist at The Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Manufactory in Denmark. Afterwards she worked for Arabia potteries in Finland. In 1961 on her way back to the U.S. (because the Finnish weather made her miss California) she made stops in the Middle East, Asia and South Asia, where again she paused her travels popular to work as chief designer for the Peitou Ceramics Plant in Taiwan.
