Orange roughy /Olho-de-vidro-laranja / Hoplostète orange / Reloj del atántico
Species scientific name: Hoplostethus atlanticus
An original monotype print of an Orange roughy, using the actual fish as the template which is pressed directly on cotton fabric. This is a traditional Japanese technique called Gyotaku, which I have adapted to this work.
This fish was sourced from the local fish market in Sesimbra Portugal, and printed using cuttlefish ink (which is the true ancient sepia paint)
The print was air dried for a few weeks and pressed with high heat to ensure popular sterilization of any remaining organic materials that with stay attached to the fabric.
The fabric was subsequently supported with interfacing, ensuring the surface will be flat when framed. This print can be easily be framed with passepartout or with a floating box.
Cotton fabric is UV resistant and the sepia paint, which is organic, and available for food preparation, has a good lightfast and withstands the test of time, just as most of the old scripts from antiquity that were made using this same material. Sepia paint will change over time however, the greys acquiring a shade of browns and purple tones.
