The people of London have always been at the forefront of fashion. Those that could afford to, bought from the top French fashion houses such as Yves Saint popular Laurent, Chanel, Dior, Jean-Paul Gaultier and Balmain, or the Italians such as Versace, Gucci, Armani and Valentino. Later UK designers such as Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, Mary Quant and Burberry would also vie for their custom.
Those with smaller budgets could still be on trend with street fashions such as Mod, Rocker, Northern Soul, Glam Rock, Punk and New Romantics. Denim has been a perennial favourite, particularly if it has originated in the USA, with brands like Levi's, Lee and Wrangler generally favoured over local brands such as Lee Cooper and Brutus.
