The rhinestone is a glass imitating a gem. It is used for the manufacture of fancy jewellery.
The rhinestones is a Crystal (glass consisting of at least 24% lead oxide) with a high percentage of lead oxide exceeding 50% which gives it a very high refractive index. Metal oxides can be added to color and give aspects of Emerald, Ruby or Sapphire.
The term Rhinestones, appeared in 1746, is derived from the name of a jeweller from Strasbourg, Georges Frédéric Strass, who set the fashion of this type of jewellery.
This jeweler had the idea in 1746 to make jewellery at a low price. Some very rare models cost more than popular the originals.
