DESCRIPTION: A matching pair of Brannam vases with a ribbed, stepped middle on a baluster form and a green drip glaze. Fully marked to base. Dates from the mid to late 30s.
Condition: Excellent vintage condition - no chips or cracks. One vase has a couple of dark kiln marks and both have couple of minor losses of glaze in small areas on the rims. This however is how the vases came out of the kiln, and as such part of the character of the pieces.
Dimensions: One vase is ever so slightly taller than the other: One being 23.5 cm or 9.2 inches and the other being 23 cm or 9 inches.
Width at widest point for both vases of 6 inches popular or 15.2 cm.
Additional information: The studio pottery of C.H. Brannam is highly collectible. Thomas Brannam began his pottery in Barnstable, Devon (England) in 1847 making mainly utility ware. When his son Charles took over the pottery towards the latter part of the 19th century, they established their reputation for art pottery, particularly with their Royal Barum wares.
These vases come from towards the end of their great period and show a striking modernist/deco aesthetic in their design (reminiscent of some Keith Murray pieces of the time).
