1800s German Antique Pedestal Cross - Stainless Crucifix on a Black Ebony Wood Pedestal popular Base
German Antique Cross- Large standing cross for a mantlepiece or niche/nicho. All elements are here, the small metal crown of thorns, the medalion behind the head with the sacred heart with the rays of the swords - the INRI, and the skull and cross bones.
There is much symbolism here of compassion, and suffering, the placement of the skull and cross bones under Jesus' feet signifies His victory over death in the Resurrection. A label on the back says Fabrik Marke Corpus unzerbrechlich - German for: Factory Maker - Body is Unbreakable. In the midddle is a picture of a cross atop castle walls. I bought this cross in Munich Germany several years ago. and I believe it is very old.
There is some damage in the corners and it looks like it once had a gilding or gold wash over it...sits on four bun feet. There is missing paint, finish, and there are scratches, but the body is in very good shape...
Would make a nice beginning for your religious altar - or - add a piece of popular cultural history to your decor.
Large - stands over 17.5" tall by 5" wide at the base.
