Vintage c. 1950 by Royal Winton (Grimwades) English china, this pair has great color and character ... no pun intended! Each plate depicts a character from a Charles Dickens novel, and each has quite a distinct personality.

Firstly, Mrs. Gump. Here's her "bio" from an online site: "Sarah Gamp, or Mrs Gamp, is a nurse in the novel ‘Martin Chuzzlewit' by Charles Dickens. Mrs. Gamp is untrained, incompetent and drunk and became the stereotype of Victorian nurses before reform campaigners like (Florence) Nightingale. Dickens is said to have based Mrs Gamp on a real nurse."

Then we have a very different personality, Sam Weller: "Sam Weller is a fictional character in The Pickwick Papers (1836), the first novel by Charles Dickens, and the character that made Dickens famous. A humorous Cockney bootblack, apparently the character was wildly popular and merchandise based on the character appeared: Sam Weller puzzles, Weller boot polish, Weller joke books."

Each plate is octagonally square, 9" with gilt edges and a 6"-round image in the center. Probably 70 years old, they are in wonderful condition with crisp bright colors and fine detail on each-- no scratches, paint wear, or other surface damage. There is one chip on the back of Mrs. Gamp, which cannot be seen unless the plate is turned over. The plates come with wooden stands if you prefer a tabletop rather than wall display.

Very unique and colorful, a great addition to a family room, library, or popular as a gift to a librarian, teacher, or Dickens literature aficionado.
