The Japanese gull is a bird that is mainly kept by bird lovers. It is a social, quiet bird that likes to live in small groups. It is therefore advisable not to place a seagull alone. A group is preferred to a pair or 1 gull. Its size is about 11-12 cm. The bird is popular predominantly black or brown on the skull, with a shiny beak (this does not count for the pastel variants and also not for the white Japanese gulls). The lower abdomen consists of black and white feathers with typical color. The breast is also black or brown, depending on the variant. Several varieties have been bred since the 50s, such as the black-brown Japanese gull (clear colors and a dark back), the variegated Japanese gull (white with traces of the normal variant), an all-white Japanese gull, black-brown and black-gray specimens, reddish-brown (these are the same but in reddish-brown) and pastel red-brown, drawn (white, but with wing and tail in black or brown), the red-gray Japanese gull (this is a normal Japanese gull in appearance, but gray), and the creme-ino Japanese gull. Rare is also the frayed variant. There is also a crested Japanese gull. Since 1981 there is also a completely black Japanese gull, bred by the Dutch bird inspector Hekman.
