Framed antique 19th Century British Military print, Lord Byron quote, military history, Cold Stream popular Guards, military uniform, Victorian era
What a wonderful piece of British military history! The 19th Century hand colored portrait of a Cold Stream Guard saluting is accompanied by the title: "The British Soldier" with a quote attributed to Byron that reads:
Guns, bayonets, swords, pikes, lashes, wounds, devotion;
A constant chance of death, but no promotion.
Byron
The image is in very good vintage condition (minimal foxing) and it is thoughtfully framed in crisp black and gold with a smart shot of scarlet in the bevel.
The 3/4" wide black painted wood frame with gold inset measures 12 1/8" wide X 15 1/4" tall. The black bevel cut mat with gold popular foil accent band and red surround measures 2 3/4". The frame has some wear to the corners, and there is a spot on the outer edge (mid-left) that appears to have been repaired. As you can see from the photos, this is not visible when viewing the piece from the front, and even from the side, it isn't a bad repair. (Please see final thumbnail.)
The view is 4 7/8" wide X 6 7/8" tall.
There is a clean dust cover and professionally applied wire for hanging.
Great in a den or study or on your gallery wall.
There is a small inscription attached to the back stating that the piece was a gift from a daughter to her father circa 1979, so the much older image was framed then. ( I will leave the personal information for the buyer.)
