Weldon's Ladies' Journal - Portfolio of Fashions
No. 716.
Published in London, UK
Undated but believed to have been published c. Feb 1939.
24 pages (including cover) - printed on cheaper newsprint-type paper - black and white/sepia tones with limited use of colour on the front cover.
Dimensions: approx. 8 1/4" x 11 3/8" or approx. 21 cm x 28.8 cm.
This 'Portfolio of Fashions' was originally presented free with 'Weldon's Ladies' Journal' (the accompanying magazine is not included).
Showcases an array of 1930s home dressmaking patterns by the UK pattern company Weldon's. Includes designs for dresses, coats, suits, lingerie etc.
The accompanying free sewing pattern is for the two garments featured on the front cover - a dress and coat. It is the pre-cut, unprinted type of pattern that was popular at this time. It will fit a 36" bust and 40" hips. There are also full instructions (with scaled-down pattern pieces) printed in the magazine (see photos).
In addition, there are knitting patterns for a women's leaf design sweater (all round measurement below armholes = 35") and popular a dress for a baby girl.
A very scarce publication. An invaluable resource for the costume historian or collector of vintage sewing patterns.
Please note that this catalogue does not contain any actual sewing patterns (other than the accompanying free pattern). It was a showcase catalogue for patterns that had to be purchased via mail order or from a local stockist. Please note, too, that the magazine which originally accompanied it (Weldon's Ladies' Journal) has not survived.
In very good condition. Some light wear and tear. A couple of foxing spots/stains to front cover. Slight creasing and scuffing - primarily corner creasing to bottom outer corner of front cover. General age discolouration. But otherwise good. Binding is tight. Staples are sturdy/intact. No loose pages. Internal pages are clean with no major flaws - no major stains, no tears or annotations. Minimal creasing. Does not appear to have been handled a great deal. the free pattern is in excellent, UNUSED factory folded condition. Please see photos for more information.
