1960s ‘Art Deco Three-Tone'
Interlocking Layered Blue & White Bead Necklace
A wordy heading,
but how else to describe these unusual purpose made beads.
If the weight and materials were different,
we'd swear these are from the 1930s.
What a stunning use of plastics.
The composite beads are separated here and there
with globe beads and little gold spacers throughout.
The length is 23”.

The 1960s:

Jewellery makers made gold and silver-plated jewellery. Fine jewellery popular was often imitated. Plastic jewellery gave gold and silver jewellery some serious competition. This was the decade of beads, mood rings, bangle bracelets, and peace symbols. A style of abstraction-ism arose in the 1960's called op art, which produces dramatic visual effects with colours and contrasts difficult for the eye to resolve.
